FEEL YOUR PAIN : MIRROR NEURONS , EMPATHY , AND MORAL MOTIVATION Paul

چکیده
Mirror neurons are brain systems found in monkeys and humans that respond similarly to actions and to the perception of actions of others. This paper explores the implications of mirror neurons for several important philosophical problems, including knowledge of other minds, the nature of empathy, and moral motivation. It argues that mirror neurons provide a more direct route to other minds, empathy, and moral motivation that complements the more familiar route based on conscious, verbal inference. To show how mirror neurons accomplish these functions, I apply a neurocomputational account of representation and inference. INTRODUCTION The discovery of mirror neurons has been hailed as one of the major recent breakthroughs in neuroscience, with possible implications for the explanation of many important cognitive functions, including action understanding, imitation, language, and empathy. Mirror neurons were first identified in the 1990s by Giacomo Rizzolatti and his colleagues at the University of Parma (Rizzolatti and Craighero, 2004). They found that monkey prefrontal cortex contains a particular class of neurons that discharge both when the monkey does a particular action and when it observes another individual doing a particular action. Similar classes of neurons have been found in humans, capable of mirroring not only physical actions but also pain and disgust.

متن کاملThe role of shared neural activations, mirror neurons, and morality in empathy – A critical comment
In the last decade, the phenomenon of empathy has received widespread attention by the field of social neuroscience. This has provided fresh insights for theoretical models of empathy, and substantially influenced the academic and public conceptions about this complex social skill. The present paper highlights three key issues which are often linked to empathy, but which at the same time might ...
متن کاملThe mirror matching system: A shared manifold for intersubjectivity
Empathy is the phenomenal experience of mirroring ourselves into others. It can be explained in terms of simulations of actions, sensations, and emotions which constitute a shared manifold for intersubjectivity. Simulation, in turn, can be sustained at the subpersonal level by a series of neural mirror matching systems. The article by Preston & de Waal (P&deW) has the merit of raising the issue...
متن کاملAversive for Me, Wrong for You: First-person Behavioral Aversions Underlie the Moral Condemnation of Harm
Many studies attest to the critical role of affect in the condemnation of harmful actions, but few attempt to identify the precise representations underlying this affective response. We propose a distinction between two potential sources of affect: an aversion to the negative outcomes of an action versus an aversion grounded in the action itself. Whereas previous models have focused on outcomeo...

Paul MacLean has investigated integrated brain functioning through selected brain lesions in animals that disturb circuits necessary for complex behaviors, such as social displays. MacLean is unique in his comparative neurobehavioral approach that emphasizes the evolutionary origins of parenting and social behaviors and the implications of brain changes in the evolution from reptiles (social di...
